Light is the most important element of photography!
It is wise to train yourself to be aware of light and light sources at all times.
The half hour before sunset is known by the film industry as “magic hour” because of the beautiful quality of light it offers. Light can add drama and softness to an image or completely ruin it if the image is overexposed.
If you need to use a flash and your camera does not allow you to control the strength of the flash, try putting a white paper bag over the flash only and not the whole camera. This should soften and diffuse the light. Test this out at home before trying it at a wedding as it will look very unprofessional if you are fiddling around trying to get it right.
Remember to capture the details.
The bride and groom have spent months planning this event from the dress and the venue, to the minor details that you might not even notice if you are not careful. It is important to capture these details because they are important to the couple and will help you sell more photos.
For example, place cards are not just pieces of paper with names on them. They are specially selected cards which may have taken someone hours to make.
You may not even be able to see the bride’s shoes under her dress but you can be guaranteed they took an enormous amount of effort to find and have possibly been giving the bride blisters for weeks!
That uninspiring looking earring the bride is wearing, could well have belonged to a recently deceased relative and handed down for five generations. If you can capture these details beautifully you will bring joy to the couple and money to your pocket.
